Energy giant AGL is set to retire its open cut mine at Loy Yang, in Gippsland, Victoria.
The problem? The company is responsible for leaving the mine site in a sustainable and safe state. Simply put, they can’t just leave it as is.
The solution? Use water from the region's river to fill the pit. And not everyone’s thrilled by the idea.
In December, the Victorian government announced how much it would charge AGL to take water from the local environment for its rehabilitation of the site.
The Gippsland Monitor’s Jacob Wallace joins Archie Milligan to explain what will happen to the giant hole in the ground.
