I’m currently writing this newsletter from News Corp’s Energy Nation Forum, held at the Sofitel in Darling Harbour, Sydney.
In today’s newsletter, I’ll give you a quick rundown of the vibe of the conference and some initial reaction to what was said.

🗣️ Why did he say that?
On the night of June 21, 1966, a 19-year-old factory worker walked up to the then-Labor leader, Arthur Calwell, outside the Mosman Town Hall and fired a sawn-off rifle at point-blank range.
Calwell survived. The glass from the car window did more damage than the bullet.

Today, I went to the Energy Nation Forum — brought to you by the Australian and a bunch of fossil fuel companies, including Woodside, Ampol, Santos and Chevron.

🚬 Does Meta care?
Advertising cigarettes is illegal in Australia. Meta's own policy bans them from Facebook Marketplace.
Yet sponsored cigarette posts, complete with photos of cartons, have been running in feeds.
We asked Meta about it and got no response.
The Department of Health says it works with platforms to address unlawful advertising, but the ads keep appearing.
