⏱️This edition of the National Account’s newsletter is a three-minute read.

👋 G’day everyone, Archie here.

Today we’re looking at the federal government’s choice to allow an opt-in for social media algorithms, but only an opt-out for gambling ads on apps and streaming services. Why not make them both opt-in?

Also, how the climate misinformation inquiry has joined the government’s pile of unanswered reports.

Let’s dive into it 🗞️.

📲 A real choice?

New laws coming into force next year will let Australians opt out of gambling ads on social media and most streaming services.

The ads will still show by default. When SBS offered the same opt-out on its streaming service, a Senate inquiry heard only one percent of viewers used it.

Meanwhile, the government is proposing rules that would require social media platforms to ask every user whether they want to opt in to the algorithm.

SEEN THIS WEEK 🤓

A Senate inquiry into climate and energy misinformation tabled its report in March, making 21 recommendations, including exposing who funds “community” campaign groups. The government was meant to respond within three months. It hasn’t, and it’s far from the only overdue report.
