⏱️This edition of the National Account’s newsletter is a 5-minute read.

👋 G’day everyone, Archie here.

In today’s newsletter, we’re looking at the eye watering sums of public money our state governments give to the operators of pokie machines.

Let’s dive into it 🗞️

Over $1.4 billion

How much NSW, VIC, QLD and SA gave pokies operators in the 2025-26 financial year

🗣️ Why do they do that? Good question.

NSW, VIC, QLD and SA gave a whopping $1.4 billion dollars back to clubs, casinos and pubs in the last financial year.

This money is returned to the pokie operators through a tax cut.

Some states are more transparent than others, Tassie and the territories didn’t publish their pokie tax concession figures - so I’ll have to do a bit more digging.
