⏱️This edition of the National Account’s newsletter is a four-minute read.

👋 G’day everyone, Archie here.

Today we’re talking plug-in solar panels and an Australian media company based in Malta.

For a while I’ve been seeing posts from the “Australia Daily” account, and a bunch of people I know follow it. But as someone who works in the media, I had no idea who was behind it.

So I did some digging 🗞️.

Folia Media Limited

The Maltese company behind Daily Official

What is that?

Australia Daily and New Zealand Daily have well over half a million followers across Instagram and Facebook.

They don’t appear to name any journalists and I couldn’t find any sign of original reporting.

The pages are run by Folia Media Ltd, a company registered in Malta, which is ultimately owned by two men listed as Australian, according to company records in Malta and Cyprus. Neither responded to questions by deadline.

Plug-in panels 🤓

You can already buy a solar panel that hangs off your balcony and plugs into a power point, but it’s not legal to use one in Australia. Western Australia has started consultation on a safety standard, the first step towards changing that. Experts say electrician costs, strata approval and renters’ rights still stand in the way.

Watch my rundown below:

Did you recognise Australia Daily? Would you use a balcony solar panel? Let me know by replying to this email with your thoughts, feedback and news tips.

I’ll be back on Wednesday.

Cheers, Archie
