⏱️This edition of the National Account’s newsletter is a five-minute read.

👋 G’day everyone, Archie here.

Today, we’re answering some of the questions that have been plodding about my mind.

Or, in the words of the Karl Stefanovic Show’s Karl Stefanovic, I’ve unleashed the “curious beast that’s inside my head“.

This Wednesday we’re looking at:

👉 How much does a vote cost?

👉 Can you be pardoned of a crime in Australia?

So let’s crack into it 🗞️

Each vote Clive Palmer’s Trumpet of Patriots received at the 2025 federal election cost $180. That’s 53 times more than One Nation ($3.35)

The one thing you gotta know

🗳️ How much did your vote cost the political parties?

This week, I looked at how much Labor, the Coalition, the Greens, One Nation and Trumpet of Patriots spent in the 2024-25 financial year and compared it to how many primary votes the parties received in the federal election.

It gave me some pretty interesting cost-per-vote numbers, and also some insight into who ran their campaign well and who needed improvement.

In future I’d like to look at cost per seat or cost per swing, as that might show even further how influential political spending is. So keep an eye out.

But who ran the best campaign on cost-per-vote? check out this video to find out:

PARDOM ME! 👑

Can you be pardoned of a crime in Australia? Last night I was wondering if there is a US-style Prime Minister’s pardon.

The answer? You can… sorta.

It’s called the Royal Prerogative of Mercy and it can see people, pardoned, freed or have their sentences reduced.

Thanks for catching up with me. I hope you enjoyed this issue, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Just reply to this email and I’ll be on the other side 👋

I’m away on Friday so I’ll be back on Monday.

Cheers, Archie
