🧪 Safety first — and foremost
A new national poll of just under 2,000 Australians from DemosAU, commissioned by Gazette News, found that 55% are concerned about the safety of nuclear power. Only 36% agreed that nuclear energy would be good for the country, while 33% disagreed and 31% were unsure.
☢️ Waste worries dominate
A major sticking point? The waste.
47% said transporting and storing nuclear waste “isn’t worth the risk”
Only 25% said it was worth it
28% were on the fence
🏘️ Not in my backyard
When asked if they’d support a nuclear power plant near their city:
51% said no — up 3% since March
Only 27% said yes — down 2%
💡 Nuclear vs renewables
Confidence that nuclear will lower power bills is dropping:
Just 34% believe nuclear would reduce power prices, a 2% dip since March
39% agree renewables will deliver cheaper energy than nuclear
A quarter disagreed that it would deliver cheaper energy, and 36% weren’t sure
🤫 The quiet campaign
All of this makes clear why the Coalition has chosen not to focus on its promise to transform Australia into a nuclear country.
