⏱️This edition of the National Account’s newsletter is a five-minute read.
👋 G’day everyone, Archie here.
I’ve got so much news for you today, so let’s dive right in 🗞️.

Giving people handouts to help them with bills is not good policy, you need to teach people to fish, not give them a fish
🗣️ Why did she say that?
I’m sure across a lot of your news feeds today there has been chat about tax reform. That’s not what I’m going to be talking about.
Instead, I wanted to know what the budget had in store when it comes to climate change and our energy future.
So I had a chat with economist Nicki Hutley and Matt McKee, chief researcher at Beyond Zero Emissions. The TLDR was … disappointment.

🪓 Making good on a promise
Further to the story in Monday’s newsletter about logging native forests, here is my interview with ANU professor David Lindenmayer, who breaks down the economic and environmental impact.
Or, if you’d rather read about it, click the link here.
Buried
With the hope it would be buried in all of the Budget chat, the government quietly released its hopelessly tardy response to the parliamentary inquiry into gambling a few hours before Treasurer Jim Chalmers made his speech.

Thanks for catching up with me. I hope you enjoyed this issue, and I’d love to hear your thoughts. Just reply to this email and I’ll be on the other side 👋.
I’ll be back on Friday.
Cheers, Archie
